| The
Black Cultural Center is pleased to announce the pilot of the BCC
Scholar Program. Applications for the BCC Scholar Program will
be accepted from June 16–September 5, 2007. The
selection process is competitive and only 3-6 students will
be chosen to participate. Students will explore the dynamics of
intellectual activism, in the tradition of black public intellectuals
such as W.E.B. Dubois, Henry Louis Gates, James Baldwin, Lani Guinier,
Cornel West, John Hope Franklin, Angela Davis and bell hooks.
Some program objectives are:
- To provide students with an opportunity to link intellectualism with activism.
- To engage students in learning research and publishing skills.
- To provide guided learning opportunities to encourage innovative and creative solutions for addressing issues facing black communities.
- To organize students to use their talents and skills to provide leadership in their communities and participate in community development.
- To provide resources for students to attend and present at conferences, develop research/writings, and their individual projects.
Pilot program participants will be chosen based upon their application packet, in which applicants must summarize their stated talents and their interest in exploring the 2007-08 BCC theme of Hip-Hop: There is a Message in the Movement.
The program highlights include: an off-campus weekend retreat
in the fall, participation in an intensive leadership development
series, a professional portfolio, and special funds (up to $500.00)
that will support the development of your project(s), conference
participation, journal submission fees, etc.
Please submit completed application packets no later than September
5, 2007, to the Black Cultural Center or via e-mail

Completed packets include:
- One-page essay addressing- How has
the Hip-Hop movement influenced the community in which you
live, what are the implications of this influence, and what
if anything needs to be done with Hip-Hop Culture? Or Is there
a message in the movement? If so, what is it, and how can we
tell the world?
- One-Page Résumé or Vita with Cover letter.
- A summary of why you want to participate in this program and what you hope to gain from being involved.
