THE CLINTON 12 Reflections of a Segregated Past and Hopes for a Reconciled Future. 4:00 p.m., Phelps Stokes

Mr. Bobby Cain and Mrs. Gail Epps Upton were among a group of black teenagers who in the Fall of 1956 were forced to attend an all-white school in Clinton, Tennessee following Brown v. Board of Education. The Clinton 12 documentary film and their commentary will unfold their story, untold for 50 years, as well as their hopes for reconciliation. Co-sponsored with the Black Cultural Center (BCC), African and African-American Studies (AAAS), Willis T. Weatherford Campus Christian Center, the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center (AC), and the Office of the President.

Environmental Justice: Strategies for Creating Healthy and Sustainable Communities with Dr. Robert Bullard

As one of the pioneering scholars and activists in the global environmental justice movement, Dr. Bullard has assisted groups for more than two decades in organizing, mobilizing, and empowering themselves to take charge of their lives and surroundings. Author of 15 books, he is the Director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center and the Ware Distinguished Professor of Sociology at Clark Atlanta University. Co-sponsored with the BCC, AAAS, and the CCC.

Museums and the African-American Experience with Dr. John Fleming

Convocation

A 1966 Berea College graduate who earned his PhD from Howard University, Dr. Fleming was the founding director of the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center and director of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Currently he is the executive director for the travelling exhibition, “America I Am: African American Imprint on America.” Co-sponsored with the BCC, CCC and AAAS.
