Ralph Bunche: An American Odyssey
The Peacemaker Spotlight on the Middle East Series with Frances and Louise Hutchins Center for International Learningg
Light Refreshments!
Few remember the name, Dr. Ralph Bunche (1903-1971), much less the legacy of his historic achievements. Yet this African American mediator and United Nations diplomat was the first person of color anywhere in the world to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. The Peacemaker depicts Ralph Bunche's successful negotiation of four armistice agreements that ended the first Arab-Israeli war in 1949, and proved that the United Nations could fulfill its peacekeeping mandate.

It’s a Multiracial Thing! Sponsored by the People Services, Teaching and Learning Center, Gear- UP, and the Black Cultural Center
Television journalist and author Elliott Lewis shares insights from his life as a black-and-white biracial American in this stimulating, down-to-earth, and uplifting session on the multiracial experience. Blending research data with a one-of-a-kind sense of humor, Elliott explores issues facing members of interracial families and examines the identity development process of multiracial individuals. Elliott’s book, “Fade: My Journeys in Multiracial America,” has been praised by The Washington Post as “a postcard from the edge of racial boundaries,” offering readers “a much-needed clarification of America’s new racial reality.” Highlights of his presentation on the Berea campus include excerpts from an award-winning documentary on interracial families and Elliott’s “Top Ten Signs You’re Living the Multiracial Experience.” A book signing will follow his presentation.
