Digging Up History: Archaeology

Archaeology DigDid you know that our building site once featured Music Hall, Hunting Hall, Putnam Hall, a chapel, several cottages to house students and faculty – even an old tennis court?

Discovering the rich history of this former green space (between Anna Smith Hall and Prospect Street) fell to a group of Berea College students as part of a actual archaeological dig.

Led by Dr. Julie Hruby of the Art Department, Berea students participated in the dig in Fall 2011 as part of their class, “ARH 234 Introduction to Archaeological Method”. Test pits, measurements, sorting materials using a sieve, identifying artifacts – all served an essential role in preparing the site for construction of the new residence hall.
