Deep Green Design

The new residence hall for Berea College will serve as a “Learning By Living” laboratory in sustainable design: featuring extensive daylight and natural ventilation throughout, rainwater reuse, healthy interior finishes, locally-harvested building materials and on-site renewable energy that include rooftop solar panels and geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Located in the green space between Anna Smith Hall and Boone Tavern on the Berea College campus, the building’s location maximizes its solar potential and ensures that cool breezes flow throughout. This footprint also allows for managing 100% of the site’s stormwater through use of rain gardens, paired with sustainable landscaping and student vegetable gardens nearby.

Faculty, staff, college administration – and especially Berea students – participated in a wide range of brainstorming sessions and focus groups to collaborate on the scope and sustainable design features for this very special new residence hall.
