Berea College’s “Head of the Holler” debuts with Silas House on KET network

Acclaimed novelist Silas House is the featured guest on the Aug. 1, 2010 premiere of “Head of the Holler,” a half-hour talk show produced by Berea College and aired on the Kentucky Educational Television (KET) network.  The episode will be aired several times in August.

Hosted by Dr. Chad Berry, director of Berea’s Appalachian center, “Head of the Holler” is a monthly series that examines issues facing Appalachia and features notable guests from the region.

In the first episode House talks about his childhood in eastern Kentucky, the inspirations for his best-selling novels and his passion for preserving Appalachia's hills and hollows.  Author of four novels and a two-time recipient of the Kentucky Novel of the Year award, House is the National Endowment for the Humanities chair in Appalachian Studies at Berea where he will teach Appalachian literature in the fall.

Recorded on location at the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center at Berea College, “Head of the Holler” premieres on the KET and KET KY channels through August.  Following is the television schedule for the premiere episode:

Future episodes will feature sociologist Dr. William Turner, who examines the experiences of blacks in Appalachia, artist and Riverkeeper director Pat Banks, Appalshop filmmaker Mimi Pickering and Melody Skidmore and Hope Brown, two teachers from eastern Kentucky.  Other shows in production will focus on storytelling, music, environmentalism, politics, education, history, industry and other topics.  A new episode will air each month.

"Head of the Holler" will be a regular series on the KET network and a new episode will be aired each month.
