About Berea College Athletics
Berea wins…a lot. But winning is not as simple as being ahead when the game is over. Victory comes only from the endurance of an athlete born to play; of a team trained to persist. The roar of the crowd is a mighty motivator but is no match for quiet determination. There are lessons to be taught on these courts and in these fields. For all who are eager to learn, Berea College is ready to teach. The College offers a wide range of intercollegiate, intramural, and club sports, and this enables you to choose a level of competition appropriate to your abilities and interests.
At the varsity level, Berea College has developed a long-standing, winning tradition. The Mountaineers annually send teams to national competitions. As a founding member of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) , Berea College competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Berea fields teams in 16 intercollegiate sports, as well as a cheerleading squad. During one season of competition in these sports, the participating student-athlete can receive a .25 academic course credit.
Berea’s varsity teams are very successful, even though they compete against many larger schools that offer athletic subsidies. While Berea offers no athletic-based scholarships, all of Berea’s students, including athletes, receive a 4-year tuition scholarship. The cost of room, board, books and fees varies according to the family’s ability to contribute toward them. This unique scholarship program allows our coaches to attract top-level student-athletes from all over the country.
Berea’s athletes come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, and many have competed at the state, conference, regional, national and international level. Our athletic programs emphasize and reinforce the college’s mission to provide a quality education to its students, thereby requiring each of our student-athletes to discipline their mind as well as their body. Berea seeks to recruit student-athletes who will commit themselves to this discipline in order to succeed both athletically and academically. It is this commitment which has enabled many of our athletes to become national champions or receive recognition as All-Americans and Academic All-Americans.
Intramural Sports Program
Berea College offers an extensive Intramural Sports Program that is designed to provide opportunities for students to maintain healthy lifestyles through various activities. These activities include wellness, fitness and sports activities and are open to all students, faculty and staff of the college. More students choose to be involved in intramural athletics than in any other activity at Berea. Sportsmanship is an integral part of the intramural program, which offers individual, co-ed, and single-gender competition. Though many events include competition, the overall goal of the Intramural Sports Program is to provide a safe environment for social interaction, participation, sportsmanship and healthy life choices. Berea College’s Intramural program provides a wide range of sports and a variety of competition levels. Some sports and activities offered include:
- Disc Golf
- Indoor and Outdoor Volleyball
- Indoor and Outdoor Soccer
- Flag Football
- 5K Run/Walk
The college also offers several club sports that have grown out of student interest in martial arts, dance, gymnastics and aquatic art.
