A
fusion of the Berea College Art Department and the Student Craft
Industries, it has as its mission the education of student apprentices
in the practice of studio productiion pottery. Students may combine
labor and academic
studies to acheive their individual educational and career
objectives.
Student apprentices work with the Program Director and a Resident
Potter. The Director teaches most of the academic courses. The
Resident Potter is a full-time studio potter experienced in the
subtlties of a working pottery.
Facilities
The facilities for ceramics at Berea College are extraordinary.
Each apprentice has adequate personal storage space for production
and work. Equipment
and technical support are available for throwing, handbuilding,
mold making and extrusion. Eight
kilns are available to support earthenware, raku, stoneware,
salt and wood firing. A kiln
class designed and constructed two kilns during the January
Short Term.
