Food, fun, and friendly conversation were in abundant supply at the Appalachian Center picnic and the weather cooperated by providing a gorgeous sunny afternoon for the festivities. The event, held September 22nd, was organized and coordinated through the efforts of a new Appalachian student organization whose purpose is to raise awareness on the issues facing the Appalachian region, as well as promoting the rich diversity of the people in the region. Chad Berry, Director of the Appalachian Center, hosted the event which was also attended by Alan Banks, Director of the Eastern Kentucky University Center for Appalachian Studies, as well as many EKU students in an effort to create connections within the broader academic community. CELTS buses made sure students from Berea arrived in time for plenty of luscious lemonade, smoky barbeque, baked beans, as well as veggie burgers for those so inclined. Afterwards, people relaxed in the shade, swung on the rope-swing, or simply enjoyed good conversation. As they say, a good time was had by all!
