In 1986 the Carson’s founded the African American Cultural Center in Southwest Virginia. The Center is housed in the former one-room school building that was built in 1939 by Ron’s great-great grandmother, Rachael Scott, to provide education to the Black children in the county. The mission of the Center is to document and to preserve the experiences of African Americans in the Central Appalachian region.
