The largest of the farm’s livestock requires some big management strategies, but BC Farms is up for the challenge. Thanks to student and staff efforts to reduce the ecological footprint of this enterprise, the cattle are spending less time in the feedlots and more “vacation” time in the pastures, through intensive rotational grazing. A position on this core team incorporates developing the grazing plan and implementing it on a daily basis; opportunities to earn AI certification; participation in all stages of cattle reproduction; feed ration management; and maintenance of herd health. All students who work on the farm assist in these activities, especially routine tasks of feeding and moving the herd. On cattle-working days, most of the student work force bands together to complete time-consuming procedures, such as weaning calves and administering pre-breeding vaccinations—one animal at a time.
