Mountain Boys to Admirals:  The Berea College Navy V-12 Program in World War II

By Robert H. Shipp, Navy V-12,'44-'45

The story of the Berea College (KY) Navy V-12/V-5 Program is beautifully told in this 253 page, soft cover book which includes a review of how the National V-12 program was conceived, developed and correlated with the story of our unique local program and participants, during and after the war, up to the present.  It also has a full roster of the sailors and Navy staff, 30 pages of photos, many biographies and complete name index.  As one of 131 colleges and universities selected as a site for the Navy training program, Berea became home to 789 sailors from July 1, 1943 to October 30, 1945.   Although their time at Berea was brief, the lifelong connections that the Navy V-12/V-5 made with one another and with the institution are extraordinary.  V-12/V-5 alumni continue to faithfully gather on campus every two years and have established the Berea College Navy V-12/V-5 Memorial Scholarship Fund, with a present value of over $750,000, which provides scholarships (cost of education) to two Berea College students annually.  The cost of the book is $25.00, plus Shipping & Handling.  Kentucky state sales tax is not charged on out-of-state purchases.  For purchasing information, please contact:
