Dear Classmates,

As I sit at my desk in Washington DC I realize I will never again have the Berea convenience of living only a short walk from my closest friends. Being outside of the Berea Bubble can have its financial advantages but I no longer have the luxury of being able to know a person’s background, who they use to date and the social cause they stand for, before even being formally introduced. Luckily our first Class Reunion is approaching because, I don’t  know about you, but even though Berea College was a bittersweet 4 years I cannot help but miss the great times and good friends.

It feels great to see how the new hooks ups back then have become the new married couples now, and the title of new college friends has been replaced with new family. I can recall some of my favorite moments being the gatherings in my room on the first floor of Anna Smith. There was always hair to be braided, gossip to be discussed, boys to diss, laughter to be made and “Rebel Crew” photo shoots to look at on facebook.  For many of us, waking up to members of “The Fam” leaving your dorm basement at 8 o’clock in the morning was only part of the fun memories at Berea College.

The track also holds some of my most memorable moments as well. Beating Centre College snobs always seemed to warm our hearts. Watching Kareem jump with dreams of going to Nationals—which he eventually did twice—, Thadd running the 400m and Tish always leading the women’s team to victory, are memories that will never fade.

Friendships and fun times are things we will never forget; however, sometimes memories of realization hold importance too. Our class has shown me the significance of female leaders and diversity. Engaging with women such as Bemene, Arlett,  Tianna, Merim and Seirisse, just to name a few, inspired me to step outside my cultural, spiritual and intellectual boundaries to learn and grow into a more well-rounded person.

As I sit miles away and reflect on the wonderful memories I had, I am excited to reunite with my friends once again for our 1st Class Reunion! Homecoming this November 13th- 15th will surely be a BLAST! I cannot wait to catch up with old friends at the Alumni Mixer, attend the BereaFEST on Fairchild lawn and listen to the Black Music Ensemble concert on Saturday. I am also eager to cheer on the Mountaineers in Seabury Gym for the Homecoming games.
I hope to see you there this fall.
