More than 500 nominations have been received for the 2011 Berea College Pinnacle Scholar Awards of Excellence. Of those, 125 have been selected for recognition as a 2011 Pinnacle Scholar.

More About Pinnacle Scholars
Recognizing excellence in the areas of science, music, and service, the Berea College Pinnacle Scholar Awards of Excellence is the only program of its kind celebrating the academic and extracurricular accomplishments of high school seniors with limited financial means.
Winners will have demonstrated significant accomplishments in one of the following areas:
Science
Accomplishments in this area include academic, extra-curricular, and/or independent study in areas related to biology, chemistry, or physics. Winners in this category will have demonstrated a mastery of the scientific process, including scientific inquiry, common research practices, and critical evaluation of results. These students possess the mind of a scientist.
Music
Accomplishments in this area include excellence in either solo or ensemble work in either vocal or instrumental music, or both. Contributions may be recognized in the areas of performance, writing, arrangement, or production. Winners in this category will demonstrate a passion for music and bringing it to the lives of others. They may step to their own beat and possess the soul of a musician.
Service
Accomplishments within this area include volunteerism, community service, and/or contribution to the betterment of the lives of others and the world in which we live. Winners in this category will demonstrate a tireless commitment to give generously of themselves. They are people who are recognized by others as having the heart of a servant.
