Preface
Welcome
to Berea College’s Short Term 2005! The College
faculty and staff hope this January term will be an especially
exciting and stimulating time for all members of the Berea
community.
In order to ensure that Short Term fulfills
its promise as a time for unique educational and experiential opportunities
for
the Berea community, in Spring 1997, the College Faculty of
Berea
College adopted the following set of goals for Short Term:
to immerse students in a particular academic
topic or experience;
-
to provide a variety of courses and learning
experiences;
-
to offer experimental and innovative courses exploring
new academic areas and pedagogic styles;
-
to promote global and
cultural awareness through travel experiences for students
and
faculty;
-
to allow students to participate in internships, independent
studies, and undergraduate
research directed by faculty members;
-
to allow for professional
growth of faculty through planning and teaching new courses;
and
-
to promote interdisciplinary and team-taught courses.
The Faculty’s commitment to these goals is embodied in
the imaginative and wide-ranging set of courses described in
this catalog. In addition to these course offerings, which cover
a wide and diverse variety of disciplines and subjects, opportunities
are available for Independent Study or Team Initiated Study projects,
Internships, and Exchanges with other colleges. Short Term 2005
is an academic term filled with opportunities for all students
and other members of the Berea community.
It is the student’s responsibility to become familiar
with all guidelines and requirements concerning Short Term as
listed throughout this catalog.
