With few exceptions, grades of “C” or higher in courses from colleges accredited by a regional accrediting association are acceptable. If not needed to meet a specific requirement, such courses will be accepted as electives. A transfer first-year student is any student transferring fewer than seven (7) course credits (or the equivalent 28 semester hours or 42 quarter hours). Questions about transfer credit for specific courses should be directed to the Office of Academic Services, which determines transfer credit. When discussing transfer work, it is helpful if students bring a copy of the catalog(s) from the previous institution(s). Transfer students who have not presented ACT or SAT scores and who have not taken mathematics courses will be assigned to MAT 010, 011, or 012, but they will have the same opportunity as new first-year students to take the COMPASS mathematics placement tests during the Summer and Fall ROWS or the Spring orientation period. [See Testing section.]
Berea College assigns the amount of credit given by the original institution, translating it into comparable course credits. A Berea course credit equals four semester hours (sh) or six quarter hours (qh). A minimum of 3 semester hours or 4.5 quarter hours is required to meet a Berea College requirement (except in Physical Education and Health). One (1) semester hour is equal to 1.33 quarter hours. Here is a credit conversion chart to help determine transfer credit equivalencies:
| Quarter Hours: |

| 6 quarter hours = 1 credit |
4 semester hours = 1 credit |
| 5 quarter hours = .83 credit |
3 semester hours = .75 credit |

Transfer students are expected to complete a degree in eight (8) terms of attendance including work transferred from other institutions. See column 2 below for the number of terms counted toward the maximum of eight (8).
The number of terms credited is based on the credit transferred—not the number of terms of attendance at the previous institution. A maximum of 67 semester hours (16.75 course credits) may be transferred from a two-year institution. One Short Term for each two (2) regular terms of enrollment at Berea College is required, up to four (4) Short Terms.
