Mathematics Placement

ACT or SAT mathematics scores and COMPASS placement test scores are used to determine placement in or waiver from the MAT 010: Pre-Algebra, MAT 011: Elementary Algebra I, and MAT 012: Elementary Algebra II courses. All new students will be required to take the COMPASS placement tests. These tests are administered during the summer and fall Registration and Orientation Workshops (ROWs), or during the Spring Orientation period.

Students for whom the MAT 010, MAT 011, and MAT 012 requirements are waived will take the COMPASS waiver test forMAT 115: College Algebra with Modeling. Those who pass the MAT 115 test and who have studied trigonometry may take the test for MAT 125: Trigonometry with Applications. Students who pass the MAT 115 and MAT 125 waiver tests and who have studied calculus may take waiver tests for MAT 135: Calculus I and MAT 225: Calculus II. The calculus tests are administered and reported by the Office of Academic Services during fall and spring orientation periods.

Entering students needing developmental mathematics skills are required to enroll in MAT 010, MAT 011, or MAT 012, as indicated by test scores, in their first term and must satisfactorily complete the requirement prior to beginning their third regular term. Students are required to enroll continuously—Fall-Short-Spring-Summer terms or Spring-Summer (optional, but recommended)-Fall-Short terms—in MAT 010, MAT 011, and/or MAT 012 until their Developmental Mathematics requirement is completed. Those students not completing their Developmental Mathematics requirement prior to the beginning of their third regular term are subject to suspension for two regular terms.
