Who Are Academic Advisers?

At the completion of the first-year teaching appointment, all full-time members of the teaching faculty are expected to serve as academic advisers. The success of the College’s Academic Advising Program is highly dependent upon the extent to which faculty members assume their responsibility as an Adviser. The advising process requires that advisers have the knowledge, experience, and interest in developing effective communication with students and that said communication is confidential, genuine, and consistent. Effective advising requires the faculty member to be informed, committed, and available to assist students in learning about diverse opportunities that are present at the College. Because students differ greatly in the variety, level, and urgency in advising needs, advisers must be sensitive to the diverse needs of their advisees and must be prepared to make effective referrals and support other levels of intervention that may become necessary. Recognizing the diversity in advising needs, our program is developmental in philosophy and practice and requires that each faculty member participate regularly in advising training. Administrators and other staff members who have participated in advising workshops and other specialized training opportunities also may serve as advisers. All individuals who advise new/entering students are expected to participate regularly in advising workshops and other training opportunities.
