Outline for Effective Advising

 

Another tool that can help you develop as an Adviser is the following outline:

  1. EXPLORATION OF LIFE GOALS
    1. Knowledge of student characteristics and development
    2. Understanding of decision-making process
    3. Appreciation of individual differences
    4. Belief in the worth, dignity, and potential of all people
  2. EXPLORATION OF CAREER GOALS
    1. Knowledge of career skills
    2. Skills in interpretation of tests
    3. Understanding of changing nature of work in society
    4. Acceptance of all fields of work as worthy and dignified
    5. Knowledge of appropriate referrals
  3. PROGRAM CHOICE
    1. Knowledge of programs available in the college
    2. Knowledge of requirements to programs, e.g., special entrance requirements, fees, time
    3. Knowledge of college requirements for transfer programs
    4. Knowledge of how others have performed in the programs
  4. COURSE CHOICES
    1. Knowledge of General Education requirements
    2. Knowledge of courses available and their content
    3. Knowledge of any special information regarding courses:
      1. prerequisites
      2. offered only at certain times
      3. transferability
      4. meet graduation requirements
      5. appropriate sequence for particular programs
    4. Rules and regulations of the college, academic probation and suspension, and limitations on course and work load
    5. Knowledge of developmental course
    6. Knowledge of student’s ability through achievement-test scores, high-school record
  5. SCHEDULING COURSES
    1. Knowledge of schedule and registration
    2. Knowledge of the systems of scheduling and changing the schedule
