Assignment and Change of Academic Advisers

The Office of Academic Services (OAS) has the responsibility for making the initial adviser assignment. Students usually are assigned to a member of the academic department in which they have expressed an interest in majoring.

First-year students typically will stay with the same Adviser through the middle of the sophomore year, at which time a major is declared. Students may be assigned a new Adviser when they complete the official Declaration of Major process, even though their previous adviser was in the department of their major. These assignments are made by the Department Chairperson or Interdisciplinary Academic Program Director. Some students may wish to remain with their previous Adviser, which requires the approval of the Chairperson or Director. Other students may want to request a new Adviser within the program’s major, other than the one assigned to them. In these cases, it is the student’s responsibility to complete a Change of Adviser form [see Appendix F], which requires the signatures of both the previous and the new advisers. The signed form then is submitted to OAS for processing. Under special circumstances, students who are reasonably certain about their major plans may elect an Adviser in their intended major during their sophomore year. This also may be done if the Adviser is going on leave. A Change of Adviser form may be obtained in the Student Service Center’s Self Serve Room (101 Lincoln Hall).

Students requesting a change of Adviser during their first year must attach a letter to the form stating the reason(s) they wish to make this change. Adviser changes during a student’s first year must be approved by the Office of Academic Services (OAS). Students who do not elect to change advisers will remain with their initial advisers until a major is declared.
