Julia B. Hooks graduated Berea College in the class of 1873. She was the first African-American to teach white students at Berea College, teaching music while still a student. She also taught W.C. Handy who wrote "St. Louis Blues." Mrs. Hooks is the grandmother of Benjamin Hooks Director of the Association for the Advancement of Colored People. (NAACP)

Dr. Mary E. Britton

Mary E. Britton was the first African-American, female physican in Kentucky. She was the sister of Julia B. Hooks.
