One of the department’s primary goals is to deepen students’ ability
to do research.
The Berea College Department of Sociology supports the initiative
of the American Sociological Association to infuse undergraduate
research training into the sociology curriculum. We have been
selected as one out of twelve departments nationally to address
the “scientific literacy” gap for undergraduate students
in sociology through participation in the Integrating Data Analysis
project. Faculty members have implemented data modules into all
courses, especially non-research courses, to foster students’ research
skills and experience.
In addition to this we provide a research “capstone” to
the undergraduate experience, integrating the knowledge and skills
acquired in the sociology curriculum. This "capstone experience" for
the sociology major at Berea College is found in the courses
SOC 461: Field Experience in Social Policy Studies and SOC 436:
Sociological Methods in Action. Every person majoring in sociology
carries out an independent research project in one of these courses;
every major must design and complete a project in which they
demonstrate their research, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Students select this “capstone” based upon the courses
they have previously completed and their individual interest
for independent research work.
