Service-Learning

On Wednesday, April 18th, the Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS) held the Spring 2012 Service-Learning Course Expo in Baird Lounge on the campus of Berea College. The event featured students, professors, and community partners who participated in service-learning classes during the Spring 2012 semester. Students, staff, faculty, and local community leaders gathered in order to learn about recent projects and share ideas for future service-learning projects. Students displayed work, including digital stories, wood crafted products, radio spots, websites, databases, and translation work. Well over 100 people participated in the event.

Students participate in service-learning projects as course-based assignments, allowing them to achieve academic learning goals by working with local leaders to address community issues. The service-learning experiences and structured reflection provide students with opportunities to make connections between course content and their service work in the broader context of civic engagement. Service-learning also facilitates the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and resources between Berea College and the community. The service-learning program provides support for faculty, students, and community partners who are involved in service-learning courses.
