Author Silas House Speaks to First-Year Students in Orientation

Silas HouseAlmost 200 first-year students at Berea College opted to read Silas House’s latest novel, Eli the Good, over the summer.  On August 24, he spoke to students with an overview of his writing and his thinking behind the book.  House emphasized how the novel speaks to freedom and patriotism, and although it is set in 1976, he believes it has resonance with the post-9/11 world.  Students were sent a copy of the book to read over the summer, and read they did.  When he was finished speaking, students peppered him with many insightful questions about the novel for almost an hour.  Afterword, he signed each copy of the book.

Silas House holds the NEH Chair in Appalachian Studies at Berea College.
