Pigs

Whether you call them pigs, hogs, or porcine, these livestock are equally important to the farm’s financial success, representing the most numerous animal species at Hunt Acres and the source of BC Farms’ pork products.  Within the past year, a total of 417 pigs were sold to a combination of finishing operations and local customers at the Berea Farmers Market.  For sustainability reasons, the enterprise is currently expanding its acreage and updating infrastructure to accommodate outdoor farrow-to-finish of forage-fed pigs.  While researching this alternative practice, students continue to raise a crop of indoor pigs for comparison alongside the experimental group.  Both methods involve students in breeding sows, artificially and naturally; feeding rations based on production stage; and developing veterinary skills, including administering vaccinations, delivering and processing newborn piglets, and rehabilitating injured animals.  The hog enterprise keeps its core team and other student workers busy with what some believe to be the most labor-intensive type of livestock on the farm.
