Goats

Formerly the sheep and goat team, this enterprise decided in 2008 to focus its efforts on the species that was better adapted to the college farmland.  The result is a mixed Spanish, Kiko, and Boer herd that provides feeder kids and goat meat for the local market.  Educational opportunities within this group are now at their peak, due to ongoing research collaboration between the University of Kentucky, the USDA-ARS, and Berea College Farms.  The study, entering its second year at Hunt Acres, evaluates the effects of toxic, endophyte-infected fescue on the reproductive and general health of goats.  Berea students provide daily care for the animals, and the farm derives its kid crop from breeding the research does.  Participation in the goat enterprise offers experience with the wiliest species on the farm, from breeding, through kidding, and into maturity; with tasks that include vaccinating, hoof-trimming, giving ultrasounds, bottle-feeding kids, and treating injuries.  In addition to its herd, the team manages several guard animals for protection from coyote attacks: two llamas, a horse, a Kiko buck, and a Great Pyrenees named Jenny.
