Field Crops

The crops enterprise produces feed quality corn, soybeans, hay, and forages, while maintaining pastures with regular mowing, plowing, and applications of fertilizer.  Some of these traditional practices are gradually being replaced by designated no-till fields and reduced external inputs, as BC Farms pursues its commitment to wise stewardship of the land.  Within the next five years, Crops plans to convert a considerable portion of its acreage to organic management.  Because the condition of the fields dictates the quality of livestock reared off them, this team plays a crucial role in the future possibility of organic meat production.  Furthermore, their success in providing most of the raw materials for the livestock diet dictates what amount of feed must be purchased from outside sources.   A recent project involved collaborating with the pig enterprise to plant forages for the hogs.  To perform their array of tasks, Crops students must become proficient at operating the farm’s tractors; all workers will participate in annual tractor safety trainings.  In addition to sowing, cultivating, and harvesting, maintenance of equipment and infrastructure falls within the obligations of this enterprise.  Student workers assist staff and upperclassmen in tractor repairs, fencing projects, and weekly vehicle inspections.  The everyday demands of running a farm smoothly rest in the capable hands of this enterprise.
